A case that deeply moved even us was brought to a positive conclusion in 2014 by the detectives of Kurtz Private Detective Agency Frankfurt, reuniting a daughter with her mother. Hannelore K. had not heard from her daughter Maike (18) for more than five days. Maike had apparently left their shared flat in Frankfurt’s Ostend deliberately and had not contacted her mother since; she also did not answer her mobile phone. She left behind only a short note: “Gone, don’t worry.” She had taken a few belongings with her, and since she was of age and had seemingly left of her own free will, the police were powerless. Hannelore K. therefore decided to consult the private investigators of Kurtz Investigations Frankfurt in order to find out, based on a few vague indications, where Maike might be. Mrs K. was, of course, expressly informed by our Frankfurt investigators that we would only be permitted to disclose Maike’s whereabouts if she was staying there against her will and/or there was imminent danger and/or Maike agreed to the forwarding of this information.
Hannelore K. feared the worst: Maike had long been involved with the local drug scene in Frankfurt’s Bahnhofsviertel, and her mother now suspected her to be drugged and in some brothel. Our Frankfurt investigators promised to do everything within their power to find Maike, fully aware that the clues were meagre: only the first name of Maike’s boyfriend and the name of a bar in the Bahnhofsviertel where the pair had spent time in the past were known.
The IHK-certified detectives of Kurtz Detective Agency Frankfurt began their inquiries as usual online, searching for the bar where Maike and her boyfriend were said to be known. However, the bar had no online presence and was also unfamiliar to the detectives despite their excellent local knowledge. Contacts within the Frankfurt scene helped here: yes, he knew the bar, a source—who must remain anonymous—revealed; he had managed to buy drugs there several times without interference from public order authorities or the police—“only cannabis”, as he assured our Frankfurt detectives. Our investigators assured him in return that we were not concerned with his drug consumption but solely with locating Maike K., and he promised to lead our private investigators to the bar for a small fee.
Fortunately, the establishment turned out to be little more than a counter with two tables in a side alley—apparently in the trustworthy hands of a middle-aged woman. Had the premises been run by well-known organised gangs whose business extended well beyond the serving of alcohol, even a seasoned Frankfurt detective might have felt uneasy, one of our investigators remarked with a wry smile. The clientele, however, consisted largely of shady and apparently not entirely sober individuals who made it clear that they wanted nothing to do with a “snooper”. Once again, great thanks are owed to our reliable contact, who managed to mediate—albeit, of course, only for suitable compensation. After questioning several guests, one was able to recall, with the help of a photograph of Maike, having seen the girl there the previous day; another recognised the boyfriend’s name and could offer a description, adding that he was also a regular visitor.
With nothing more than these scant yet promising details, our Frankfurt detectives decided to observe the bar in the hope that Maike or at least her boyfriend would appear shortly. Their hope was fulfilled, making the long, uneventful hours sitting in the car worthwhile: the very next evening a young man entered the bar who matched the boyfriend’s description perfectly. With great tact, so as not to provoke unnecessary aggression, the detectives of Kurtz Detective Agency Frankfurt approached the target, who indeed turned out to be the boyfriend. He was visibly high but, contrary to expectations, proved to be not a bad chap at all. Yes, Maike was with him of her own free will, he said, but she did not wish to return to her mother—and that was her right. It took considerable persuasion from our investigators to convince him to allow us at least to speak with Maike, but he eventually relented, making it clear that the decision would be Maike’s.
The detectives of Kurtz Investigations Frankfurt were led to the flat—or rather, the makeshift accommodation—where Maike was staying. Fortunately, the girl appeared to be in reasonably good condition, although clearly under the influence of drugs; nonetheless, she seemed fairly lucid. The room smelled strongly of cannabis, but there were thankfully no signs of harder drug use.
Maike was surprised to learn that her mother had apparently moved heaven and earth to find her; she had assumed her mother hardly cared. During a long conversation, our Frankfurt detectives were able to convince Maike that this was anything but true and that she was deeply missed at home. Apparent from conversations both with Maike and with the client, frequent tensions and arguments between mother and daughter had repeatedly made cohabitation difficult. Fortunately, Maike was willing to agree at least to meet her mother on neutral ground, and the detectives of Kurtz Investigations Frankfurt promised to mediate. She refused, however, to return with them, and although she was in acceptable condition under the circumstances, our detectives could not take her directly to her mother. The mother was informed immediately about the situation, including that, according to Maike, the only way to bring her back was through a meeting involving a thorough discussion.
Even we, as fairly hard-bitten detectives in Frankfurt, are deeply moved and delighted that the discussion arranged through our mediation not only took place but was highly successful: Maike has since moved back in with her mother, although the two certainly had matters to resolve that even we could not help with—especially the drug use. We at Kurtz Detective Agency Frankfurt are all grateful that the case reached such a positive outcome and wish Hannelore K. and her daughter Maike all the very best.
